Pray Every Day

“We must speak to God as a friend speaks to his friend, servant to his master; now asking some favor, now acknowledging our faults, and communicating to him all that concerns us, our thoughts, our fears, our projects, our desires, and in all things seeking his counsel.”
St. Ignatius of Loyola

“Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God.” But when we pray, do we speak from the height of our pride and will, or “out of the depths” of a humble and contrite heart? He who humbles himself will be exalted; humility is the foundation of prayer, Only when we humbly acknowledge that “we do not know how to pray as we ought,” are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer. “Man is a beggar before God.”
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2559)

METHOD OF PRAYER (3 R’s)

Read | Read a book written for spiritual meditation, scripture passage or a spiritual quote. As you read, think about what you are reading. Invite Jesus into your mind and heart.

Reflect | Read until something strikes you. Then, stop, put down the book and reflect on what is being said. Why did this passage strike you? What is the Holy Spirit communicating to you that connects to your lived experience?

Resolution | Choose a concrete action that you will do the rest of the day that connects to what the Holy Spirit revealed to you. This might be saying a certain phrase to yourself or making some other choice to mend your relationship with God or others. You can reflect at the end of the day to see how well you did with your resolution.
