Statement Of Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien

It was with great joy that I received word that our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI named Archbishop Timothy Broglio, Apostolic Nuncio to Dominican Republic, Archbishop for the Military Services. The appointment indicates the special regard of the Holy See for America’s Military Archdiocese.

I have known Archbishop Broglio for many years and I consider him a personal friend. His priestly approach to his work, as well as the respect and friendships he has made among those in the hierarchy of the Church, his brother priests, and those in the diplomatic community, will serve him well in his new position.

As I stated at the time of my appointment as Archbishop of Baltimore, those who serve our Nation are shining examples of generosity and our chaplains, beloved by their people, are sterling examples of priesthood and a splendid credit to our Catholic Church. I know they will warmly receive their new Archbishop.

As the most recent Archbishop of this singular Military Archdiocese, I am also confident that Archbishop Broglio will come to know this firsthand and that he will embrace those he will now serve with great dedication and pastoral love.
