St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson is moving closer to completing its sale to the Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System, which is expected to be completed this fall.

Catholic Health Initiatives, St. Joseph’s parent company, plans to sign an asset purchase agreement around Aug. 30, said Kellie Taylor, St. Joseph’s director of marketing and community health.

“Things are progressing well,” Taylor said.

How the ownership transfer might affect the nearly 150-year old hospital is still unknown, but St. Joseph is committed to its heritage, mission and identity, Taylor said.

At St. Joseph’s recommendation after a yearlong evaluation, the Colorado-based CHI decided in March to transfer the hospital’s ownership to UMMS, citing the need for health care providers to be part of regional health care networks.
