Sister Mary Rita Barbernitz, O.S.F., Baltimore native, dies at 81

A funeral Mass for Sister Mary Rita Barbernitz of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia was  offered May 31 at Assisi House in Aston, Pa. Sister Mary Rite died May 24; she was 81.

Born in Baltimore, Sister Mary Rita grew up a member of St. Clement Mary Hofbauer in Rosedale and graduated from The Catholic High School of Baltimore.

She joined the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1953 and professed her first views in 1955. With a bachelor’s degree in English from Neumann University in Aston, Pa., and a master’s degree in religious education from Princeton (N.J.) Theological Seminary, she ministered primarily in education, congregational administration and healthcare.

Sister Mary Rita served for 50 years in the Diocese of Trenton, N.J.

In 2005, she moved to Assisi House, where she served in prayer ministry until her death.
