Sister M. Rene Stewart, M.H.S.H., dies at 75

A Mass of Christian Burial was held for Sister M. Rene Stewart, a Mission Helper of the Sacred Heart, June 9. She died of brain cancer at Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore, on June 5 at the age of 75.

Born June Beryl Stewart, Sister Rene entered the Mission Helpers community in Baltimore in 1956 and began her ministry teaching classes in New York. She also taught in North Carolina, Massachusetts and Florida.

Sister Rene earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore, and a master’s degree in religious education from University of Detroit.

“Sister Rene had a quiet elegance about her that permeated all that she did,” said Sister Natalie DeLuca. “Her ability to listen, to reach out at the first inkling of a need for help was tremendous.”
