Sister Leonie Mary Sheehan, S.S.N.D., dies

A funeral Mass for School Sister of Notre Dame Leonie Mary Sheehan was held June 23 in the Chapel at Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, Conn. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bethel, Conn. Sister Leonie, 88, had been a professed member of the School Sisters for 58 years.
Born in Boston and educated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Roxbury, Mass., where she first met the School Sisters, Sister Leonie earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Boston College, then taught in public and parochial schools while earning the first of her two master’s from the same institution.
Sister Leonie professed first vows in 1955, when she began a seven-year stint at the Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore, where she taught high school English and was moderator of the school newspaper, which received honors for scholastic journalism. She also taught English at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis, 1977-1978. Besides Massachusetts, her teaching career also took her to high schools in New York and Rhode Island.
She moved to Villa Notre Dame, home to retired School Sisters, and from 1984 to 2001 served as a medical secretary at the adjacent Lourdes Health Care Center. She remained as a volunteer, until moving there herself in 2009.
