Sister Eleanor Augustine Beckman, O.S.F., former Essex teacher, dies

A funeral Mass for Sister Eleanor Augustine Beckman of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia was offered June 2 at Assisi House in Aston, Pa. Sister Eleanor Augustine died May 26; she was 88.

A Philadelphia native and Sister of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 66 years, Sister Eleanor Augustine entered the congregation in 1947 and professed her first vows in 1950.

Earning a bachelor’s degree in biology from Villanova (Pa.) University and a master’s degree in chemistry from Fordham University in New York City, she ministered primarily in education, spending many years teaching science.

Sister Eleanor Augustine served primarily in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, as well as in the Diocese of Wilmington, Del., and the Diocese of Allentown, Pa.

She also taught at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Essex, her lone assignment in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Sister Eleanor Augustine moved to Assisi House in 2008, where she served in prayer ministry.
