A funeral Mass for Sister Edward Thomas Griffin, O.S.F., was offered Aug. 1 at Assisi House in Philadelphia. Sister Edward Thomas died July 27. She was 89 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 69 years.
A native of Ireland, Sister Edward Thomas ministered primarily in healthcare and earned her R.N. from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore.
In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Sister Edward Thomas ministered at St. Joseph Medical Center for 54 years, both in its current location in Towson and at its original site on Caroline Street. During her years there (1938-1946, 1948-1952, 1956-1969, 1970-1999) she served in various capacities: nursing student, nursing supervisor, assistant director of outpatient services, and pastoral associate.
Sister Edward Thomas also ministered at Our Lady of Angels Maternity Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., St. Patrick Hospital in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, St. Agnes Hospital in Philadelphia, and St. Francis Hospital, Trenton, N.J.. In 1999 she moved to Assisi House in Aston where she served in prayer ministry until her death.
