Seton Keough seniors take next step

As The Seton Keough High School, Baltimore, settled into second place in the IAAM track and field championship May 17 at Calvert Hall College High School, Towson, two Gator seniors bid farewell to an excellent high school career.

Megan Voorhees and Katie Sacker are both heading off to The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., this fall, where they will compete at the Division III level while jumping in with both feet on the academic front.

Sacker, an academic whiz with a 4.0 grade point average, will serve as the senior class salutatorian during the May 20 graduation and will major in nursing.

Voorhees, an honors student who finished in the top 15 of her class, will major in architecture and looks forward to attending Mass right on campus.

“I fell in love with the school after a three-week architectural program last summer,” said Voorhees, a field event athlete who specializes in the shot put, discus and pole vault.

Voorhees said that her early efforts in field events were more of a “joke” than anything, but after some success, she settled in and became quite proficient in several events. In fact, over the last two years, she was one of the first female pole vaulters in the IAAM.

Sacker, a one- and two-mile runner, liked the feel of Catholic University, saying, “The school had a very friendly atmosphere and seems like the perfect fit for me.”

Voorhees and Sacker have been good friends since their freshman year at Seton Keough and hope to continue that friendship at Catholic University, where they will both compete in track and field.

The Gators finished in second place during the regular season, behind the McDonogh School Eagles. The Eagles also placed first in the IAAM track and field championship.
