Pope John Paul II named the Rev. Msgr. Mitchell T. Rozanski, currently pastor of St. John the Evangelist in Severna Park, an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore today. He will also serve in the role of Eastern Vicar for parishes in Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Harford Counties in Maryland.
He will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Bishop William C. Newman in August 2003.
Bishop-elect Rozanski was born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 6, 1958. He attended elementary school at Sacred Heart of Mary in Dundalk. He attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School (Essex) and the Catholic University of America, before entering the Theological College at the Catholic University of America, where he received seminary training. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen on November 24, 1984.
Parish assignments included appointments at St. Michael, Overlea in 1984 and the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in 1985. He was appointed Associate Pastor at St. Anthony, Baltimore in 1985 and St. Isaac Jogues, Baltimore in 1990. He was named administrator of Holy Cross and St. Mary Star of the Sea parishes in Baltimore in March of 1993, before being appointed pastor there in October. In January 2000, Fr. Rozanski was appointed temporary administrator of Immaculate Conception parish in Towson and in June of that year he assumed the same duties for St. John the Evangelist, Severna Park, where he was named pastor on November 28, 2000.
Bishop-elect Rozanski’s ordination to the office of Bishop will take place on August 24, 2004.
