Year Stephen Tauber will graduate from Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore. A parishioner of St. Margaret, Bel Air, and product of its parish school, Tauber was honored with the “Heart of a Lion” Award at the Kevin Dare Invitational track and field meet at Penn State University. Dare died in a pole-vaulting accident in 2002. The award promotes courage, sportsmanship and leadership. Leg problems forced Tauber to switch from distance running, where his father had excelled for Curley in the early 1980s, to pole vaulting, where he has mentored his teammates.

Students from Calvert Hall College High School who marched in the Sugar Bowl Parade New Year’s Eve in New Orleans, where its marching band earned first place in a field competition that earned the Cardinals the opportunity to wave an over-sized flag during the National Anthem and play during halftime of the Sugar Bowl itself. The band is under the direction of Brian Ecton, Sarah Fabian and Rob Smith, who comprise the school’s instrumental music staff.

Teachers being honored with the National Catholic Educational Association’s “Lead. Learn. Proclaim!” award during its April 2017 convention in St. Louis, including one Marylander, Mary Agnes Sheridan, the Middle Level STEAM coordinator and mathematics teacher at Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson. The award honors educators who “demonstrate a strong Catholic educational philosophy as well as exceptional ability, skills and results.” One parent described Sheridan, a parishioner of St. Joseph, Cockeysville, who has launched several initiatives in her eight years at NDP, as a “Math Angel.”

Fifth-graders at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Essex participating in “Follow the Voyage,” a partnership with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and its training ship, the TS Kennedy. Kelly Medvigy, their teacher and the cousin of a cadet at the MMA, is incorporating a series of STEM activities as her students follow the vessel’s progress, engage with its crew online, and learn more about their ports of call during a six-week journey that began Jan. 8. The fifth-grade will simultaneously lead a canned food drive.5
Catholic school students among 20 finalists in the 30th annual Champions of Courage Black History Month essay competition sponsored by WBFF-TV Fox 45 and two affiliates. Nathan Born of St. Frances School in Pasadena; Sarah Burger of St. John School in Westminster; Madison Cote of Our Lady of Hope-St. Luke School in Dundalk; Kate Greenhill of St. Augustine School in Elkridge; and Ryan Njoroge of Sacred Heart of Glyndon School will share their essays on air and receive a $100 award. Njoroge is pictured with Donna Russell, his language arts teacher.

Average of the grade point averages of Darryl Morsell (3.5), Jaden Robinson (4.2) and Jalen Smith (3.7), who had the Mount St. Joseph High School basketball team off to a 20-1 start through Jan. 17, with the Gaels’ only loss coming in a Baltimore Catholic League game at St. Maria Goretti High in Hagerstown Jan. 4. Morsell, a 6-foot-5-inch junior, has accepted a scholarship to play at the University of Maryland. Smith (pictured) is a 6-foot-9-inch junior. The 46th annual BCL tournament will be played March 4-6.
