Mr. Warthen’s death saddens Mount de Sales community

Bernard W. “Bernie” Warthen, 63, died Jan. 9 of undetermined causes.

Mr. Warthen was the business manager for Mount de Sales Academy, Catonsville, a position he had held for more than two decades. His wife, Mary Jo Warthen, is the principal of Holy Family School, Randallstown, and a former principal at Holy Rosary School, Baltimore.

“Bernie was a truly good person,” said Sister Elizabeth Anne Allen, O.P., principal of Mount de Sales. “He believed whole-heartedly in the value of Catholic education, as is evidenced both by his long years of service to Mount de Sales Academy and his support of his wife Mary Jo’s own career in Catholic schools. As a business manager, he understood well the business end of a Catholic school, but he also understood its mission and devoted himself to that mission. His combination of competence, compassion and dedication made him a unique and vital part of this school community.”

In addition to his wife, Mr. Warthen is survived by his son Jeffrey, daughter and son-in-law Mary Catherine and Charles Lee Tatum, his son and daughter-in-law Christopher and Karen, and five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sarah and Emily Tatum and Max and Jake Warthen.

A funeral Mass was offered Jan. 14 at St. Agnes, Catonsville.
