The Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart announced their plans to sell the Mission Helper Center in Towson July 12.
Sister Elizabeth Langmead, vice president of the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart, said the move could happen in “two to three years, at the soonest.”
Sister Elizabeth said the religious community doesn’t have a new location selected yet and added that the Mission Helpers “will stay in the Baltimore area for our main center.”

“We’re really just investigating places,” Sister Elizabeth said. “For our needs, we don’t need a large plant like this and we would like to be able to identify something that will meet our needs and include meeting space for (outside) groups.”
Sister Elizabeth said she doesn’t know the square footage of the three-story, brick building located at 1001 W. Joppa Road. She was unaware how much the property could sell for and declined to say how much the asking price will be.

According to the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation website, the property is valued at more than $7.2 million. The property is zoned residential, Sister Elizabeth said.
The order has been at the Towson location, which houses 21 religious sisters, for more than 20 years, Sister Elizabeth said. At least 10 additional religious sisters lived at the center 20 years ago.
“It really is a move so that we will be able to sustain our mission and ministries,” Sister Elizabeth said. “It’ll free up resources and the number of people it takes to maintain a building like this.”
