Maryvale Prep makes most of Senior Day in field hockey

By Catholic Review Staff
The field hockey team from Maryvale Prep maintained its perfect record in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference Oct. 24, when the Lions posted a 4-2 victory over visiting Mount de Sales.
It was Senior Day for Maryvale Prep, and Annie Milwicz, a member of the class of 2017, made the most of the occasion, scoring three goals for the victors. Ally Furnari had the Lions’ other goal.
“It always awesome to come up with a win on their day,” Maryvale Prep coach Michelle Thaniel said, of Senior Day. “We try to get all the seniors playing time, to make them feel like this is their day. It’s nice when you can come up with a win.

“All our goals had one or two passes before they scored,” she continued. “I’m very pleased with the teamwork and adjustments they made throughout the game. The team scored their best four goals of the year. The way they brought it down the field, the way they worked together, it’s really awesome.
The Lions, who are No. 14 in The Sun rankings, improved to 8-0 in the B Conference, 10-1-1 overall. The Sailors dropped to 6-2 in the conference, 13-5 overall.

“You always have the momentum when you have your Senior Game,” said Mount de Sales coach Mary Genter, of Maryvale Prep’s home-field advantage. “We have to play through it and we all travel. I’m very proud of my girls … They did a great job today.”
Both will host B Conference tournament quarterfinal games Oct. 31. The semifinals will be played Nov. 2, and the championship game Nov. 6, at Archbishop Spalding. That game will start at 3 p.m. It will follow the C Conference championship game, and precede the A Conference.
Spalding and Notre Dame Prep have locked up the top two seeds in the A Conference.
