James Upchurch honored

Bishop W. Francis Malooly, western vicar, presented James Upchurch with the Bishop Frank Murphy Peace and Justice Award during the annual social ministry convocation March 3 at The Seton Keough High School, Baltimore.

The award recognizes those who have had an impact advancing peace and social justice.

Mr. Upchurch is president of Interfaith Housing Alliance, a Frederick-based interdenominational organization that provides housing for low-income people in Western Maryland and Pennsylvania. The late Bishop P. Francis Murphy, former western vicar, co-founded the group in 1990.

“I remember from Frank how closely both of you worked together and also how clearly committed both of you have been to providing adequate housing for as many as possible,” said Bishop Malooly in a March 6 letter to Mr. Upchurch. “In the short history of Interfaith Housing, remarkable things have occurred.”
