Father Joseph Breighner’s column (CR, Nov. 18) contained a photo of the late Dorothy Day and stated, “We can all live by the words of her friend, Father John (Jacob) Hugo: You love God as much as you love the least.”
Father Hugo was just one of Day’s mentors. The other was Father Aloysius Farina, another priest from the Diocese of Pittsburgh. I know this, as I was in St. Anthony Orphanage, in Oakmont, Pa., where Father Farina was superintendent of 120 schoolkids. I remember all this vividly, in my twilight years, at 83.
Father Hugo published a number of books, of which I am the proud owner.
