Iceland volcano disruptions leave Mount St. Mary’s students stranded in Italy

A group of Mount St. Mary’s University students is stranded in Florence, Italy until a flight out of Europe becomes available.

The 26 Emmitsburg students and some faculty members spent the spring semester studying abroad in Florence. They were scheduled to return to Maryland recently, but will remain for another week.

A university spokesman said students were anxious to get home, “but are appreciating their time in Florence.” The spokesman said Mount faculty member Karl Einolf is with the students and has been keeping a blog with photos and video at www.einolf.wordpress.com.

An April 14 Icelandic volcanic eruption and the resultant ash and smoke halted air travel in and out of Europe.
