History lesson on Baltimore’s schools

A bit of a correction to your piece “Baltimore is cradle of U.S. Catholic Education” (CR, April 5). The late Bishop Owen Corrigan, auxiliary to Cardinal James Gibbons, penned a wonderful book on the history of Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Baltimore noting a number of schools antedated on Paca Street. Several were run by devout French lay women, but the most notable was the girls’ school run by the Poor Clares and later the Visitandines at Georgetown in the 1790s. Of course, we’re still covered because at that time Georgetown was part of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
