Former St. Rita School principal dies

A funeral Mass for Immaculate Heart of Mary Sister Mary Mark Carnes, a former principal of St. Rita School in Dundalk, will be offered June 30 at St. Rita. Sister Mary Mark died June 26; she was 81.

Sister Mary Mark entered the IHM Congregation in 1945 and made her final profession of vows in 1951.

She was a teacher serving for nearly 50 years in Catholic elementary schools in North Carolina, Idaho, Oregon, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, Rhode Island and Maryland. In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, she served at St. Agnes Elementary School in Catonsville from 1973-1978 and at St. Rita School from 1983 to 1992. She served as principal of St. Rita School from 1992 to 2005.

She served as an associate chaplain of Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore from 2006-2007. From 2008 to the time of her death she was a volunteer or the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Baltimore. While residing at the convent at St. Rita, Sister Mary Mark was also a prayer minister.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
