Father John F. Guidera spent 60 years ministering in India

A funeral Mass for Baltimore native Father John F. Guidera, a Jesuit who ministered for 60 years to the people of India, is to be offered May 18 at Jesu Bhavan, the Jesuit Novitiate and retreat center in Jamshedpur, India. A memorial Mass will be offered May 27 at St. Alphonsus Rodriguez, Woodstock. Father Guidera died May 16. He was 86.

A 1943 graduate of Loyola Blakefield, Father Guidera entered the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, Pa., in 1943. He was a Jesuit for 68 years and a priest for 56 years. Jesuits typically spend 13 years in formation before being ordained.

Father Guidera, who spent most of his life in India, worked at the Jesuit Seminary and Mission Bureau in Towson in 1978. He is survived by a brother and six sisters including – Rita Zungailia of Baltimore and Joan DeSantis of Hunt Valley.
