Essex couple’s 60th anniversary gets papal blessing

By Catholic Review Staff

John and Joan (Reese) Thompson, parishioners of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Essex, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Aug. 23. The celebration included a papal blessing, which their daughter, Kathleen, was able to arrange through the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

The two first met as fifth-graders at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School. Both rode the No. 23 bus to high school, as John went to Calvert Hall College High School, then located on Cathedral Street in Baltimore, while Joan attended The Catholic High School of Baltimore.

Joan went on to St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, and John served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. They were married in 1952 at their home parish, and had two children and one grandson.
