Caritas House to host forum senior veterans

Veterans and their spouses may qualify for a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs pension when “aid and assistance” is needed with assisted living, day care, home care or nursing home care.

Caritas House Assisted Living, a program operated by Catholic Charities, is offering a free informational program to explain these VA benefits 5:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at Caritas House, 3308 Benson Ave. on the Jenkins Senior Living Campus. Call 410-646-6600 for reservations.

Eligible veterans must have served during a time of war but do not need to have served in a war zone, said a Catholic Charities spokeswoman.

Many veterans do not qualify for a pension because their income is too high. However, when they need “aid and assistance” they can deduct the cost of that aid from their income, the spokeswoman said.

There are also some asset limitations, but these are also modified by the increased cost of care, she said.
