Bullet causes lockdown on Mount campus

A bullet was found lodged in a dorm-room window on the campus of Mount St. Mary’s University Feb. 6.

By 2 p.m., the Emmitsburg school announced the situation was clear and classes would resume after the early part of the day was disrupted.

Mount president Dr. Thomas H. Powell was scheduled to have a brief assembly at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 6 with the university community in Knott Auditorium.

According to the school’s Web site, an unharmed student, who lived in the third-floor Sheridan Hall room, said the incident happened at 10:35 a.m.

Twenty minutes later, the student reported the incident to the public safety office.

Frederick County police were still investigating at 1 p.m. and were asking all people on campus to remain indoors.

“I initiated the university emergency management team and our emergency response system was active immediately,” Dr. Powell said in a statement. “The investigation is underway and the Frederick County sheriff’s department is on campus and is in control of the situation. On the side of caution, the university is under a shelter-in-place directive.”

The Web site posted an item on its front page earlier in the morning that read: “This is not a test,” before detailing the emergency.
