Bridesmaid bingo to benefit day shelter

Women in frilly bridesmaids’ dresses, a wedding cake and a traditional bouquet toss are just some of the trappings of a wedding – minus a bride or groom – that will mark the fourth-annual Bridesmaid’s BINGO, a May 23 wedding-themed fundraiser for Catholic Charities’ My Sister’s Place.

The 5:30-8:30 p.m. bingo game at Scottish Rites Temple at 3800 N. Charles St. will benefit the 25-year-old West Baltimore day shelter for homeless woman and their children.

The wedding theme of a bridesmaid was chosen to depict the second-place status many of the women who frequent the West Mulberry Street program have experienced.

Participants of the $75-per-ticket event rummage their closets to wear old bridesmaids’ dresses with a prize awarded for “best” dress. A bouquet toss is held with the catcher winning a prize, and a “bride” and “groom” are selected to cut the tiered wedding cake and hors de oeuvres are served.

My Sister’s Place – with services that include hot meals, shower and laundry facilities, case management and resource referral from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week – will eventually move into the current Our Daily Bread building at 411 N. Charles St. after the meal program moves to its new building at 725 Fallsway in early June. The building at 411 N. Charles St. will be renovated before the program can move in.
