Bishop-Elect Galeone to be Honored in Archdiocesan Farewell Mass

Eighty-four priests of the Archdiocese of Baltimore will celebrate Bishop-elect Victor B. Galeone’s long history of service to the Church in the Archdiocese of Baltimore with a special Mass on Thursday, August 9, 2001 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore. Bishop-elect Galeone will serve as main celebrant, with Cardinal William H. Keeler, Archbishop of Baltimore and retired Archbishop William D. Borders presiding. Auxiliary Bishops William C. Newman, Gordon D. Bennett, and W. Francis Malooly will concelebrate.

On August 21, 2001 Monsignor Galeone will be ordained a Bishop and installed as the ninth Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine at the Cathedral-Basilica in St. Augustine, Florida. The Diocese of St. Augustine includes 17 counties in northeastern Florida and serves approximately 143,000 Catholics. There are 51 parishes in the diocese and 27 schools. Bishop-elect Galeone and Cardinal Keeler will be available to speak with media representatives prior to Mass from 5 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. at the Cathedral.

Bishop-elect Galeone was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in Rome on December 18, 1960. He served two periods as a missionary priest in Peru (1970-1975 and 1978-1985). He was pastor of St. Bernard parish, since renamed Holy Korean Martyrs (1985-1989), and St. Thomas More parish (1989-1996). In December 1995 the Holy Father named him a Prelate of Honor (Monsignor). He became pastor of St. Agnes parish in Catonsville in 1996.

Bishop-elect Galeone will bid farewell to St. Agnes parish by celebrating Masses there on Saturday, August 11, 2001 at 5 p.m. and Sunday, August 12, 2001 at 9 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. He will depart for St. Augustine a few days later.
