Archbishop O’Brien to celebrate Red Mass

Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien will celebrate the 49th annual Red Mass Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore. The Mass will be preceded by an interfaith service and will be followed by a reception at the Engineers’ Club of Baltimore.

The Red Mass is a liturgy attended by area judges and legal professionals that marks the traditional opening of the court year. The celebration gets its name from an early 14th century English tradition of judges of the High Court wearing the same red-colored robes as priests.

The Red Mass celebration is sponsored by the St. Thomas More Society of Maryland, a Catholic association of legal professionals.
