Advent begins Dec. 1

By Catholic Review staff

Catholics throughout the Archdiocese of Baltimore and around the world will mark the beginning of Advent Dec. 1 when the four-week period of preparation for the coming of Christ begins.

The beginning of advent ushers in the start of a new liturgical year in the Catholic Church, as the current liturgical year ends Nov. 24 with the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

Advent, a time of expectation, anticipation and joy, comes from the Latin word for “coming.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church notes that during Advent, the faithful also “renew their ardent desire” for Christ’s second coming.
