Most Rev. Jerome D. Sebastian

Titular Bishop of Baris – Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore

Jerome Daugherty Aloysius Sebastian was born on November 22, 1895 in Washington, D.C., son of William Henry and Kathryn (Lyons) Sebastian. He attended St. Patrick’s School and St. Patrick’s Academy in Washington, D.C. prior to moving to Maryland to attend St. Charles College in Catonsville. To complete his priestly formation, he attended St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. On May 25, 1922, Jerome Sebastian was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore by Archbishop Michael J. Curley.

Prior to his appointment of Auxiliary Bishop, he ministered in the Archdiocese of Baltimore in the following ways: Director of Sodality Union of Baltimore; Director of the Women’s Retreat League of Baltimore; Director of Junion Newman Clubs; Chaplain of the Carroll Club of Johns Hopkins University; Prosynodal Judge of the Archdiocesan Tribunal of Baltimore; Director of Vocations; Archdiocesan Colnsultor and Parish Priest Consultor.

He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore on December 22, 1953 by Pope Pius XII and was consecrated on February 24, 1954 at the Assumption Cathedral in Baltimore by Archbishop Amleto Giovanni Cicognani, Apostolic Delegate to the United States. Until his death in 1960, he was associated with St. Elizabeth Church in Baltimore, first as curate, then as pastor.

Bishop Sebastian died on October 11, 1960 at the age of 64. He was the first person to be buried in the crypt at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.
