Sister Marie Joseph Kerr, O.S.F., ministered in nursing

A funeral Mass for Sister Marie Joseph Kerr of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia was offered Feb. 14 at Assisi House in Aston, Pa. Sister Marie Joseph died Feb. 7; she was 87.

A native of Trenton, N.J., she entered the sisters in 1947, professing her first vows in 1951.

With a bachelor’s degree in nursing education from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a master’s degree in nursing from Pennsylvania State University, she ministered primarily in nursing and nursing instruction and supervision.

In addition to 33 years of service in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and additional service in Zambia, Ireland and the Diocese of Trenton, N.J., Sister Marie Joseph ministered at what is now the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, founded by her congregation in 1864 as St. Joseph German Hospital.
