Archbishop William E. Lori announced eight clergy assignments in the Archdiocese of Baltimore Aug. 20, including a new pastor of St. Leo the Great Parish in Little Italy. Pallottine Father Salvatore Furnari is leaving the parish to become pastoral director of St. Jude Shrine in Baltimore, and will be replaced by Pallottine Father Bernard Carman.
A native of Camden, N.J., the 62-year-old Father Carman attended Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, which is operated by the Pallottines, and earned bachelor’s degrees from The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C., and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome; a master’s in pastoral theology, religious formation, from the Aquinas Institute in St. Louis; and a doctorate in dogmatic theology from CUA.
Ordained to the priesthood in 1979, he has served as a pastor and associate pastor in New Jersey and New York, and served two stints (1985-88 and 2000-2003) as rector of the Pallotine Seminary at Green Hill in the Maryland suburb of Hyattsville. He was general secretary of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate in Rome from 1992 to 1998, and has been associate pastor of Our Lady of Pompeii in the New York borough of Brooklyn since 2009.
Father Carman can celebrate the Mass and preach in Italian, Spanish, German and American Sign Language. He said he has been a fan of Star Trek since the TV series debuted in 1966, to the extent that he was among the interview subjects in “Trekkies 2” (Paramount Pictures, 2004).
