Of the 29 Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, celebrating jubilees this year, six taught at the former parish school at St. Clement I in Lansdowne. Their brief biographies follow.
Sister Laurine Haley
A native of Melrose, Mass., Sister Laurine, who is celebrating her 70th jubilee, entered the congregation July 22, 1945, from Sacred Hearts in Malden, Mass. She professed perpetual vows Jan. 23, 1953.
Sister Laurine graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in education and received her master’s degree in elementary school counseling from the University of New Hampshire.
She served St. Clement I as a guidance counselor from 1972-73 and as director of religious education from 1973-78.
Sister Laurine has also ministered in Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Washington, D.C. She currently serves as a prayer minister at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
Sister Eugene Francis Keaveney
A native of Everett, Mass., Sister Eugene Francis entered the congregation Feb. 2, 1945, from St. Rose in Chelsea, Mass.; she professed perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1952.
Sister Eugene Francis, who is celebrating her 70th jubilee, graduated from Saint Mary-of- the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in education and earned her master’s degree in education from Rivier University in New Hampshire.
She served as principal at St. Clement I from 1960-66.
Sister Eugene Francis, who now serves as a prayer minister at Saint Mary-of-the-
Woods, has also ministered in Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C.
Sister Winifred Mary Sullivan
A native of Terre Haute, Ind., Sister Winifred Mary entered the congregation July 22, 1945, from St. Ann in Terre Haute. She professed perpetual vows on Jan. 23, 1953.
Sister Winifred Mary, who is celebrating her 70th jubilee, graduated from Saint Mary-of- the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in education; she earned her master’s degree in education from the University of St. Louis.
She taught at St. Clement I from 1950-52.
Sister Winifred Mary has also served in Indiana, Illinois and Missouri.
She now ministers in residential services at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
Sister Mary Ann Phelan
A native of Baltimore, the former Sister Marie Marcella entered the congregation July 22, 1955, from St. Clement I and professed perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1963. She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in social studies.
Sister Mary Ann, who is celebrating her 60th jubilee, returned home to serve as principal of St. Clement I from 1973-78.
Sister Mary Ann has also ministered in Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C.
Today, she serves as a sign language instructor at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and volunteers at Providence Spirituality and Conference Center at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
Sister Claire Hanson
A native of Chelsea, Mass., the former Sister Brigid Eileen entered the congregation Sept. 12, 1965, from St. Rose in Chelsea and professed perpetual vows Sept. 30, 1973.
Sister Claire, who is celebrating her 50th jubilee, graduated from Indiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She earned a master’s degree in elementary early childhood education from Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass.
She taught at St. Clement I from 1975-76.
Sister Claire has also ministered in Washington, D.C., New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Illinois. She now serves on the staff at St. Agnes School in Arlington, Mass., and as a home health care provider at Peace of Mind Inc. in Jamaica Plain, Mass.
Sister Kathleen Leonard
A native of Chelsea, Mass., the former Sister Dennis Therese entered the congregation Sept. 12, 1965, from St. Rose in Chelsea and professed perpetual vows Nov. 23, 1973.
She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and received her licentiate in clinical psychology from Gregorian University, Rome.
Sister Kathleen, who is celebrating her 50th jubilee, taught at St. Clement I from 1970-71.
Sister Kathleen has also ministered in Massachusetts, Indiana and Washington, D.C. She currently ministers as a therapist and consultant in Wakefield, Mass.
