“Then and Now,” the October 2014 special edition of the Catholic Review commemorating the 225th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, enjoyed a sweep of top honors in three media competitions, two at the international level.

The 80-page issue was most recently acknowledged June 19 in Buffalo, by the Catholic Press Association (CPA) of the United States and Canada, with first place for Best One-Time Special Issue.

It had previously been honored in May, in Toronto, by the Associated Church Press (ACP), with its Award of Excellence (first place) for Reporting and Writing in a Theme Issue, Section or Series, and by the Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association (MDDC), with Best of Show in the Special Section category. The special edition also won in MDDC’s Division D, non-dailies with a circulation more than 20,000.

The special edition earned five other honors. “Two Days in the Archdiocese of Baltimore,” a slideshow and video by former staff photographer Tom McCarthy Jr., took first place in Photo Series from the MDDC; first place for Online Video and second place for Art/Design/Graphics in a Photo Spread with Article or Cutline from the ACP; and second place from the CPA for Best Online Presentation of Multi-media Visuals.
