Sister Maura Walsh, M.H.S.H., dies

A funeral Mass for Sister Maura Walsh, a member of Baltimore’s Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart for 69 years, will be held May 8 at the Mission Helper Center Chapel in West Towson. Sister Maura died May 2 at Stella Maris in Timonium. She was 91.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., she ministered in religious education, including teaching adults how to teach religion and prepare children for the sacraments. She taught on an Indian reservation in Arizona and on U.S. Army posts in Germany, and conducted family workshops for the Air Force in Germany, Holland and Spain.
In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Sister Maura was director of religious education at St. Dominic in Hamilton, 1968-78; St. Anthony of Padua in Gardenville, 1978-83; St. Clement Mary Hofbauer in Rosedale, 1991-99. She held a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Loyola University Maryland and a master’s degree in Theology from St. Mary’s Seminary and University, both in Baltimore. She also taught at St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute.
Visitation at the Mission Helper Center Chapel will be May 7, 4-5 p.m., with a vigil service to follow at 6:30 p.m.
