Thanks to their innovative methods of challenging and motivating the academically advanced students in their classes, two Archdiocese of Baltimore teachers were among 10 receiving special recognition from the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.
Nominated by their own students, elementary school teachers Mark Zawisa of the School of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland and Ryan Kloetzer of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School and Children’s Center in Essex, were named Center for Talented Youth Sarah D. Barder Fellows.

Lisa Harlow told the Catholic Review that her son, Ben, a student at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, nominated Kloetzer, his teacher, for his involvement in a program that allowed higher-achieving fourth-graders to take some fifth-grade classes.
According to materials from the Center for Talented Youth, Zawisa was recognized “for his excellence in motivating and inspiring children with advanced academic ability.”
Prior fellows inducted Zawisa, Kloetzer and the others at this year’s annual Sarah D. Barder Conference, Feb. 20-21 in San Francisco.
