A child’s first Communion is one of the highlights of his or her spiritual life. Choosing a meaningful gift for such an important occasion can be a challenge, but there are many options.
Below are are some ideas.
1. Memory book – Ask the child to write a short essay about what it was like to receive the Eucharist for the first time. Use a photo service such as Shutterfly to make a memory book that includes the essay interspersed with photos from the celebration.
2. Rosaries – A child’s first Communion is a perfect occasion to give a special rosary. Made of everything from wood to glow-in-the dark plastic, there are plenty of varieties. Consider also giving a rosary box engraved with the child’s name.
3. Books about the saints – There are numerous children’s books celebrating the lives of the saints. From classics such as Father Lawrence G. Lovasik’s “Picture Book of Saints,” to new offerings from Ellen Cook Nibali (a parishioner of St. Louis in Clarksville), these works provide heroic models of the Christian life for children to emulate.
