High school basketball fans will flock this month to Allegany County, where Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland serves as host to boys’ and girls’ tournaments.
The Bishop Walsh Girls Invitational will be conducted March 6-8 on its campus. The field includes McDonogh, the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference champion; St. Frances Academy, which gave McDonogh a strong challenge in the IAAM semifinals; and St. Maria Goretti of Hagerstown, which earned its first championship in the Independent-Parochial School League, which includes teams from Frederick County, Washington County and Pennsylvania.
The 54th annual Alhambra Catholic Invitational will be held at Frostburg State University March 13-15. In addition to the Bishop Walsh boys, the host team, the field includes Mount St. Joseph, the three-time champion of the Baltimore Catholic League; Calvert Hall, which lost to the Gaels in an overtime title game; and De Matha of Hyattsville.
