The three Catholic universities in the Archdiocese of Baltimore rank in the top 100 for best regional institutions in the north by U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings for 2014.
Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore was fifth; Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, 20th; and Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore, 60th, according to the rankings, which were released Sept. 10.
Loyola University Maryland also ranked sixth in the up-and-coming category for regional northern universities.
This year’s report features data on nearly 1,800 colleges and universities and includes the institution’s tuition, acceptance and graduation rates and class sizes, according to the report. Eligible schools were ranked by as many as 16 factors.
The annual report’s rankings divide U.S. institutions into categories, including national universities, liberal arts colleges, regional colleges and universities and best value.
Adjustments to the rankings were made this year, including less weight to the high school rank of incoming freshmen and more weight to graduation and retention rates, according to the report.
Indicators include the assessment by administrators at peer institutions (which accounts for 22.5 percent), retention (22.5 percent) and faculty resources (20 percent). Other indicators include student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.
