After 20 years, Mount Saint Agnes Theological Center for Women will close in November

The following announcement was provided by Mount St. Agnes Theological Center for Women
For 20 years, Mount Saint Agnes Theological Center for Women has presented creative, inspirational, high-quality programming that has touched many lives in the Baltimore area and beyond. Despite that rich history of providing intellectual support for spiritual lives, while developing and strengthening the voices of women for the good of the church and society, the ministry has reached a crossroads and will close on Saturday, Nov. 23. Mount St. Agnes announced this news Aug. 15.
After careful reflection, the center’s Board of Directors unanimously agreed in July that it is best to close Mount Saint Agnes because the center will not be sustainable in the future. The leadership of the Sisters of Mercy – South Central Community, which sponsors the ministry, supports the decision.
Because the center will remain open until Nov. 23, several programs scheduled for this fall will go forward as planned at the center, which is located at 909 Poplar Hill Road in Baltimore. For more information about those, visit the website of Mount Saint Agnes at https://www.mountsaintagnes.org/.
Mary Aquin O’Neill, RSM, Ph.D., who is a Sister of Mercy, scholar and theologian, and Diane Caplin, Ph.D., who is a scholar and philosopher, founded the unique center based upon a call by the Sisters of Mercy “to act in solidarity with women seeking fullness of life and equality in church and society.”
Since then, Mount Saint Agnes Theological Center for Women has hosted 200 programs in Baltimore, as well 100 in other locations in the U.S. and foreign countries.
“The history of Mount Saint Agnes Theological Center for Women is a solid one, a sound one, and it is due to the dedication of its founders; its faculty; its current and former board members; its recent executive director, Veneta Lorraine; and its staff, especially Associate Director Sacha Ludwig,” said Helen Marie Burns, RSM, a Sister of Mercy and chair of the current Board of Directors. “It is with prayers of thanksgiving that we celebrate the blessing of this ministry and all that it has accomplished.”
