Oblate Sisters of Providence elect leaders

 

 

During an April 1-5 meeting at their Arbutus motherhouse, the Oblate Sisters of Providence elected new leaders to serve the Baltimore-based congregation for the next four years.

Sister Mary Alexis Fisher, originally from Pascagoula, Miss., was re-elected to serve as superior general.

Sister Mary Lorraine George, a Connecticut native, will serve as assistant and first councilor. Sister Mary Lorraine has served in the past as a school principal and currently heads the maintenance and grounds division at the motherhouse.

Sister Dora Fernandez, originally from Costa Rica, will serve as second councilor. She is the religious education coordinator at St. Patrick Parish in Miami Beach, Florida.

Sister Rita Michelle Proctor, born in Washington, D.C., will serve as third councilor. She is principal of Cardinal Shehan School in Baltimore.

Sister Brenda Cherry, originally from Baltimore, will serve as fourth councilor. She is the director of Mount Providence Child Development Center at the motherhouse.

Founded on July 2, 1829, by Mother Mary Lange, the Oblate Sisters of Providence were the first order of women religious of African descent in the world.
