From fireworks at St. Pius X in Rodgers Forge to service projects and open houses, activities will run the gamut during Catholic Schools Week Jan. 27-Feb. 2.
In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Archbishop William E. Lori started off the week by visiting Mount de Sales Academy in Catonsville Jan. 28. He visited The John Carroll School and St. Margaret School in Bel Air Jan. 29 and was to visit St. Ursula School in Parkville Jan. 31.
“The weeklong celebration gives us a moment to pause and reflect on the mission of Catholic education to provide a Christ-centered education that is academically excellent and emphasizes the formation of the whole person … mind, body and spirit, “ said superintendent Dr. Barbara McGraw Edmondson, who also visited schools.
Catholic Schools Week got its start in 1974 and this year’s theme is “Catholic schools raise the standards,” which highlights the recent launch of national best practices to ensure the sustainability of Catholic schools and the consistent student achievement as a result of high academic standards and an emphasis on spiritual formation.
In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, there are 49 Catholic elementary/middle schools and 20 high schools serving 27,118 students.
