John Carroll, Battelle sign agreement supporting school’s STEM initiative

By Catholic Review

Officials from The John Carroll School and Battelle signed a memorandum of understanding Dec. 10 in support of the Bel Air school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Academy.
The STEM Academy was launched in September in an effort to provide John Carroll students with the skills, knowledge and real-world applications they need for college and expose them to STEM careers.
Students who participate in the academy will be eligible to receive a “diploma with distinction” in STEM. Engineering, computer-aided design, architecture and robotics are some of the courses offered. A course of study has been mapped out to provide a program of excellence.
Battelle, a research and development organization, will support the academy by offering students internships, job shadowing experiences and student research support during their junior and senior years. John Carroll faculty and Battelle employees will work together to develop curriculum enhancements for classroom teaching.
“As the largest independent research and development organization, Battelle provides innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing needs,” Richard O’Hara, John Carroll’s president, said in a statement. “This mission aligns with John Carroll’s goal to shape our students to embrace opportunities and excel as responsible citizens in a global society.”
