Jesuit Father Gerald J. Fitzpatrick dies

A funeral Mass for Jesuit Father Gerald J. Fitzpatrick is expected to be offered Dec. 3 in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. He died Nov. 27 of complications from Crohn’s disease. Father Fitzpatrick had been a Jesuit for 53 years and a priest for 41 years. He was 71. 

Father Fitzpatrick was ordained a priest in 1971 at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore.  

The following year, Father Fitzpatrick moved to Chile where he ministered for more than 25 years as a pastor and teacher. 

He returned to the U.S. in 1997 to serve as assistant director of the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth, a post he held until 1999.

After serving for one year as associate pastor of a Philadelphia parish, Father Fitzpatrick served as pastor of a New Jersey parish from 2000 to 2003 and as a spiritual director of St. Pius X Retreat House in New Jersey from 2003 to 2005.

He then served as retreat director in Faulkner in southern Maryland from 2005 until earlier this year. 

Father Fitzpatrick studied theology at Woodstock College in Woodstock.
