Maryland native to showcase portraits

Joseph Sheppard, an internationally acclaimed painter/sculptor will present an exhibition of more than 50 drawings, paintings and sculpture at the arts program gallery of the University of Maryland University College through June 18.

Titled “Beast of Burden,” the massive exhibition, which debuted in Italy in 2005, is essentially social commentary by the artist who has explored the physical and often dangerous occupations of the working class around the world.

Mr. Sheppard, a Guggenheim Fellow, was born and educated in Maryland and divides his time between his home in Pietrasanta, Italy, and his studio in Maryland. The artist, who has written 13 books on drawing and anatomy, has garnered many awards and honors throughout his illustrious career.

He recently completed a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI which hangs in the Pontifical North American College in Rome. His portraiture also includes Cardinal William H. Keeler, Cardinal Lawrence Sheehan and Archbishops John P. Foley and William D. Borders.

The gallery, which is open daily to the public, is located at University of Maryland University College Inn and Conference Center, lower level, 3501 University Boulevard, East, in Adelphi.
