Stasakova primed for Indoor Track Championships

After two of three IAAM league indoor track meets, John Carroll senior Erika Stasakova, winner of the IAAM Cross Country and Maryland/DC Private School titles last fall, had not qualified to compete in any individual event at the IAAM/MIAA Championship Meet on Jan. 18.

However, a two-meet surge over nine days put the talented Bel Air school runner among the leaders in the 500-, 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and made her a favorite in any of those events. Her next challenge is deciding which events to run at the championships.

Stasakova met the 800 and 1,600 marks at the Frostbite Invite on Dec. 27. The 500 and 3,200 came at the third and final regular season group meet on Jan. 4 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex. Her winning time of 11.34.7 also put her on top of the IAAM 3,200 qualifiers list by nearly 30 seconds.

McDonogh was equally dominating in the team point race, scoring 127.333 to go unbeaten in the IAAM meets. Seton Keough placed a distant second at 77 as illness and injury slowed the Gators. Mount de Sales placed third with a season high of 62 followed by John Carroll, 40; Institute of Notre Dame, 36.666; Notre Dame Preparatory School, 34.25; Maryvale Preparatory School, 24; Mercy High School, 10; Archbishop Spalding High School, 9.25; The Catholic High School of Baltimore, 7.25; Bryn Mawr, 6.25.

Event winners were: 55 dash, Amanda Kimbers, McDonogh, 7.0; 55 hurdles, Kristen Brown, McDonogh, 8.3; 300, Kimbers, 41.3; 500, Becky Boulay, Mount de Sales, 1.22.0; 800, Gabrielle Harbin, Mercy, 2.35.5; 1,600, Erin Laschinger, NDP, 5.22.1; shot put, Chelsea Tavic, Seton Keough, 34-6; high jump, Lacey Shuman, Maryvale, 5-0; long jump, Brown, 16-5.25; triple jump, Leila Forrester, Seton Keough, 33-6; 4×200 relay, McDonogh, 1.49.5; 4×400 relay, Mount de Sales, 4.24.3; 4×800 relay, NDP, 10.28.7.
