ROME – Julien Kenord, a Haitian Caritas worker, was shot and killed in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Caritas Internationalis reported.
Kenord, 27, was employed by Caritas Switzerland and had been working in Haiti helping earthquake victims rebuild their lives, said Lesley-Anne Knight, secretary-general of Caritas Internationalis, the Vatican-based umbrella organization for Catholic charities.
Kenord had just cashed a $2,000 check at a local bank Oct. 8 when unidentified assailants shot and robbed him in his car. He died later at a hospital.
A police investigation was launched, but no further details were known, Caritas Internationalis said Oct. 12.
“This is a terrible loss for Julien’s family and friends. With dedication and loyalty, Julien helped earthquake victims in Haiti rebuild their lives. His colleagues at Caritas will miss him very much,” Knight said in a statement.
Caritas has worked in Haiti for many years and was able to deliver immediate assistance to victims there when a massive earthquake struck in January. In the six months following the earthquake, Caritas provided food, water, shelter, health care, sanitation, counselling and protection at a cost of $46.8 million.
