While I agree wholeheartedly with my friend Tony Magliano’s comments (CR, Nov. 4) that “politicians refuse to work for the passage of legislation that protects the unborn, and abolishes capital punishment,” he goes way too far in other areas that the government should not be involved.
Our government is not responsible for providing universal health insurance, lifting the poor out of poverty, reversing global warming, ensuring adequate nutrition for the hungry masses, etc. Basically, we are. The government is broke and has proven an abject failure in providing anti-poverty programs here and abroad. We are our brothers’ keepers and donate more to charitable causes than any other nation in the world.
As far as global warming is concerned, I strongly believe that any government mandates will only be minutely effective, and policies proposed by some in Congress, such as “Cap and Trade” will only kill jobs, increase poverty and leave us with less income to donate to great charitable organizations such as Catholic Relief Services, the American Red Cross, etc.
We must stay true to our Founding Fathers, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, from which we have strayed so far away because of laws passed by liberal progressives in our country in the last 100 years. The results of the Nov. 2 election shows that true Americans are beginning to speak out for our constitutional rights. Hopefully, this is only the beginning.
