Lecture: Everything Happens for a Reason? Really? (Archdiocese of Baltimore)
Everything Happens for a Reason? Really? You've heard it, you've been told it, you may have even said it on occasion. "Everything happens for a reason." At first glance, this bit of pop theology may sound like the celebrated Ignatian ideal of "Finding God in all Things." But how similar are these ideas, really? What do they suggest about God, about our relationship with God, and about how we make sense of our own story? St. Ignatius Catholic Community will hold a lecture on these very issues on Monday, April 4 at 7:30 PM with Fr. Timothy O'Brien, S.J. O'Brien is a Jesuit scholastic of the Maryland Province. After completing a master's degree in theology at the University of Chicago Divinity School, he began teaching at Loyola University Maryland in 2014. Tim is a writer and editor at The Jesuit Post. Join us in this season of Easter as we consider the mysteries of suffering and resurrection -- and making meaning of both -- in our own lives.

Lecture: Biblical Mercy - The Basic Biblical Image of Mercy in the Second Covenant (Archdiocese of Baltimore)
St. Ignatius Catholic Community will present a lecture by Fr. William T. Miller, SJ entitled Biblical Mercy: The Basic Biblical Image of Mercy in the Second Covenant. This lecture will be held on Monday, April 18th at 7:30 PM. Miller is the Adjunct Professor of Theology and Scripture at Loyola University Maryland. He holds a doctorate in Old Testament from Union Theological Seminary and teaches courses about the Old Testament at St. Mary’s Seminary and the University of Baltimore. Two of his books are The Book of Genesis: Question by Question (2006) and The Book of Exodus: Question by Question (2009) published by the Paulist Press. In this lecture Miller will discuss how the references to mercy in the Old Testament and how they are often picked from the prophets or the psalms, but will explain why mercy should also be studied in larger contexts such as the book of Exodus. This lecture will look at the working relationship of God and Moses in the drama of Exodus 1-15. This working relationship is then intensified in the Covenant ceremonies at Mt. Sinai and has a worldwide purpose to it; it is not simply an exclusive arrangement for the Chosen People alone. The free commitments made on their sacred honor by the people of Israel at Sinai were almost immediately broken during the Gold Calf incident. Theologically, this betrayal is virtually of equal weight with the earlier sins of Adam, Eve, and Cain. Finally, Miller will discuss how God and Moses reach an agonizing reconciliation in Exodus 33-34. Moses pleads in extremely bold ways. Then God’s mercy is highlighted, mercy at its most surprising and intense climax. Location: Ignatian Hall There is no cost for this event

ALCOHOLISM & DRUG ADDICTION: THE EPIDEMIC (Archdiocese of Baltimore)
Chances are your family or someone you know has had their lives touched by addiction. Please join us for ALCOHOLISM & DRUG ADDICTION—THE “EPIDEMIC, Wednesday, April 27, in the Pastoral Center Social Hall at 7:00pm, a very informative evening of education and answers offered by a professional team associated with Father Martin’s Ashley—one of the premier treatment centers for alcoholism and drug addiction in the state. Recent studies indicate that outer-urban areas, such as our own, are increasingly finding more and more people (young and old) becoming addicted to not only alcohol but now heroine—which is of particular concern. Parents and children (high school age and higher) are encouraged to attend since our young people are often vulnerable targets. The evening includes the following topics: What is Addiction? (vs. abuse; experimentation; etc.); the Neurobiology-Brain Chemistry; Addiction in Young People vs. Adults; What Resources are Available—How does one Access and Utilize them; You Are Not Alone.
