The Good Samaritans is a school founded to serve the economically, socially, and intellectually deprived children and adults of Haiti. It targets specifically the poorest of Haiti's poor, those children who most desperately need a chance. The goal of the Good Samaritan School is to form a new generation of Haitians who are well-equipped to become future leaders of the country.
The Good Samaritans opened its wrought iron gate July 7th, 2001 to hundreds of dignitaries and supporters for a benediction by Cardinal William H. Keeler and dedication ceremonies with civic and religious leaders. Contributions from Food for the Poor and private donors funded the construction of the 13,000 square foot school now directed by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny.
Children are now entering the school at 5 years old, and will be offered the opportunity for a free education through the 9th grade. They are given breakfast on arrival and a substantial meal following classes. In addition, all of the children in the school will undergo a yearly physical examination by a physician on site.
Adult Literacy classes for men and women will be provided Monday thorugh Friday over a three year cycle. Classes on sewing, embroidering, and cooking, as well as other developmental programs for women, will also be offered in the afternoon.
The project is looking for enthusiastic individuals who are willing to contribute their time and skills to the development and implementation of projects identified by the Bishop of the Diocese of Gonaïves.
Tasks may involve construction, as well as repairs or renovations of existing structures, including painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, etc.
In addition, volunteers will be given the opportunity to visit various parishes in order to identify the needs of the people.
